When Ali Mardan Khan died in Kabul in 1657, his body was brought to Lahore to be interred beside his mother. He built gardens in Peshawar, Kashmir, several Sarai’s at Kashmir, and the tomb garden of his mother where he was also buried after his death. The grave is in a chamber below ground level, accessed by stairs, and has been decorated by visitors as though it were a saint's shrine. The garden was originally square, with the tomb placed in the center.
